Creative Monologue (fiction) by Holly Rice

I thought you said you would always be there for me?  Isn't that the promise we made to each other back in second grade?  What ever happened to my best friend who didn't need boys to make her happy? Where has that Elizabeth gone?  Is there any chance she'll come back?  I'm tired of waiting here as your second choice.  Do you even remember the nights we'd stay up laughing at the TV till our eyes filled with tears as salty as the popcorn we munched on?  I do.  I remember the two of us being together so much to the point where we felt so in sync.  Even the words we spoke came out at the same time causing us to giggle our favorite word "jinx!".  Endless memories scurry across my mind just hearing your name.  I guess I just miss you.  Why don't you yearn for those all-day shopping trips where we secretly make fun of the people in the mall?  Why is there no time for me - for us?  Is it so hard to make the time?  Friendships are like flowers.  They need water, the tears from laughing till we cry.  The tears from someone making you so upset that all you can do is cry to your best friend.  Friendships, like flowers, need sunlight.  Memories are sunbeams to the soul.  They radiate in your mind as fond times, times you will never forget or get back.  Friendships need to grow.  How can we grow if you choose to be with David 24/7? You're my best friend and you always will be.  A good friend has heard everything about you, every story, every embarrassing moment.  But your best friend was there with you, through all of it.  You will always be that person to me.  But why can't we continue what we had going?  A bond that shouldn't be destroyed by a dumb boy.  A dumb boy who you know will hurt you eventually.  I've never hurt you Elizabeth.  I would never, ever hurt you.  Hurting you would be like hurting myself.  Your pain has always been my pain.  As much as much pain as you've caused me recently, I will be here for you.  I will be here when you realize you're wrong. I will be here if you ever decide to come back.  Because that's what best friends do.  When I said I was always going to be there I meant it.  Did you?

Monologues are used in theatre to express what a character is thinking.  Monologues are spoken onstage and often tend to be dramatic.  They can also be comedic, sad, or nostalgic.  I chose to write this one which is purely fiction.  My idea was to make it about a friendship falling apart due to new relationships.  I think many people can relate to this monologue and I hope you can imagine an actor performing this onstage.  Monologues are supposed to be written the way someone would talk.  This is why I chose the language to have characteristics of a teenage girl, because that is the speaker or the character.

Original Quotes
by Holly Rice

1) "Never compare yourself to anyone.  It will only lead to the false pretense that you are something to be compared. You are too special for that."

2) " When all else fails and you feel like giving up, just remind yourself that you have chocolate at home." - a girl who needs chocolate (a.k.a me)

3)  " Instead of being your biggest critique, try being your biggest fan.  There comes a point where you have to stand up for your own dreams."

4)  "It could be worse - you could be a cat... and cats can't talk."

5)   " Know that your current situation is not your final destination.  The paths you can take are never-ending."

6)  "Be kind to everyone you meet.  What you project to the universe comes back to you. Who wouldn't want a friendly smile?"

I often find it therapeutic to come up with my own quotes that I remember throughout time to time.  Going to Unity Church feeds my interest of spirituality, peace and affirmations.  I love to write positive passages on my real blog, Holly Jolly Blogs.  Not many people know that I love to write.

Personal Experience

     TARZAN

My hope for everyone, in life, is to find an interest and be passionate about it.  When working on the "Meaning of Life" project, I discovered what matters most to me is pursuing passions.  There is no greater feeling than achieving success in an area that matters deeply to you.  I consider myself very fortunate to have found my passion at such a young age.  Theatre is my reason for waking up in the morning with excitement and joy.  Theatre is the reason I am confident in my skin with a lack of care of what others think of me.  At this point I can't even imagine my world without theatre.  It has played such a defining role in shaping my life.

Junior year has been a great year for me in terms of theatre.  James River High School is ONE week away from opening it's musical in which I am a leading role.  Tarzan, the upbeat wild musical has made this year an unforgettable experience.  Tarzan is the age old tale of a human orphan rescued and raised by gorillas!  His gorilla mother, Kala (played by me) and best gorilla friend Turk (Nikhil Anzola) teach Tarzan to become an ape.  Tarzan grows up to be this amazing ape-man but his world is soon shattered when British scientists find their way to the jungle.  He discovers what it means to be a human man and on the way he learns to fall in love with the beautiful and bright, Jane Porter! From the amazing friendships strengthened, to new bonds forming, everyone in this cast has truly embraced the message of the show; family.

I have absolutely loved being a part of this musical.  Tarzan was the first movie I ever saw in theaters when I was very little.  Needless to say, I was totally obsessed.  It makes me feel so nostalgic to be a teenager portraying one of my favorite disney characters.

My wish is to leave the audience inspired.  Inspired to try new things! Inspired to find their own passion! To be encouraged to pursue their hobbies and dreams.  Being a high school student can sometimes cause you to feel like your dreams are "stupid" or "dumb".  The fear of what others may think of them gets in the way of pursuing passions.  My hope is that Tarzan will inspire James River students to follow their passions and be comfortable in their own skin.

the next day promises nothing." - Eric Davis
